Dinner: Garlic and Thyme Steak with Cilantro Rice

Cooking a steak (even just for a simple dinner) can sometimes be a daunting task, especially when you are trying to achieve maximum flavour and temperature. The number one trick is to ensure to get a nice sear on the steak, while basting throughout the cook. This will keep the steak tender and flavourful. Once you feel more comfortable with how the cooking of the steak is going, then it is time to play with some spices.

Ingredients:
  • Sirloin grilling steaks
  • Garlic
  • Thyme
  • Butter
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Cilantro
  • White rice (we used Minute Rice for a quick cook)
Instructions (Steak):
  1. First, season the steak with salt and pepper
  2. Get your pan hot and drizzle in some olive oil
  3. Lay your steaks into the hot pan and sear all sides
  4. Lay in your fresh thyme springs and whole garlic cloves (lightly crushed)
  5. Put in your butter (about 4 teaspoons) into the pan
  6. Start basting your steaks with the garlic and thyme butter sauce
  7. Cook your steak to your desired temperature
  8. As a final step, place the thyme and garlic on the steaks so they absorb the flavour
  9. Steaks are done - Now it is time to prepare the rice!
Instructions (Cilantro Rice):
  1. Chop your fresh cilantro roughly and not too fine
  2. Season your rice with salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil
  3. Toss in your fresh cilantro and mix
  4. All done! Enjoy!
This is the perfect steak recipe if you are looking for something quick during the week. It is also a great way to make steaks for dinner without using the outdoor BBQ grill.
